HydroXpand Co., Ltd. is a South Korean manufacturer of anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis products, founded in December 2023 by three hydrogen researchers from KAIST. The company works on what makes clean hydrogen expensive: cell voltage, degradation rate, stack cost and output per stack. Its anode grows NiFe layered double hydroxide directly on nickel foam and uses no iridium. The product line runs from single electrodes and 1 to 25 cm² test cells through the 2 kW HXS-2 stack, which has more than 3,000 hours of cumulative operation, to the 30 kW HXS-30 46-cell full stack, available now. HydroXpand supplies more than 70 customers in over 10 countries from its plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi.

What we can speak about

We are happy to comment on record, including on questions where the honest answer is that we do not know yet.

  1. Where AEM sits against alkaline and PEM, and what each trade-off costs in practice
  2. Iridium and platinum group metal supply, and what removing iridium does and does not solve
  3. How stack durability is actually measured, and what a published hour count does not tell you
  4. What breaks when a cell design is scaled from the laboratory to a 30 kW stack
  5. What integrators get wrong when they build their own balance of plant around a bare stack
